Summary – Travel Advisory for Burundi
Several European countries, including Sweden, advise against traveling to Burundi due to an unstable security situation. The advisory has been in place since 2015 and has never been fully lifted.
The main reasons include political instability, the risk of sudden violence, limited state capacity, weak infrastructure, and very restricted consular assistance. The situation can deteriorate quickly without warning, and evacuation or emergency support may be difficult or impossible.
As a result, travel insurance may be invalid, and both leisure and business travel are strongly discouraged. There is broad international consensus that Burundi should be considered a high-risk destination, and travel should be avoided until the situation improves in a clear and lasting way.
